I define myself in specifics, for some reason. Of course, no one can really describe themselves in total (although "awesome" does a pretty good job as far as I'm concerned) so this is just a snapshot. Do kids even know the word "snapshot" anymore?
I'm a teacher of upper elementary-age children in an urban charter school. I have a master's degree in education, but my bachelor's (and first love) is in film. I've even made a few shorts and some promotional videos for the school I used to teach at (and of course, several terrible horror movies when I was a teenager). I'm not really super excellent at filmmaking, but the skills I've acquired are impressive for the training and the experience I have. I have a dog and a cat, and they're both pretty quirky, so we make a good family.
When I'm not working, I have a handful of other, more interesting, pursuits! Recently I joined a recreational softball team and am loving it. I work out 3-4 times per week. I love to read, and my tastes are broad. I mostly gravitate towards fiction -- classics, horror and historical fiction being my genres of choice. I freaking love Richard Matheson. Some of my other favorites are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, Summer Crossing by Truman Capote, Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, Roots by Alex Haley, and pretty much anything by Joe Hill. I am still attached to Stephen King although I haven't liked his new stuff in a decade. My favorite comic strip is Get Fuzzy. I also read comic books. I write sporadically but have no aspirations of publishing. I'm a Cardinals fan and get out to a few games every year. I go to a science fiction convention in October every year and have been for close to 20 years. I am an excellent cook, which is good because I'm fairly picky as far as food goes. I mostly eat vegetarian for everyday meals, though, because as my sister and I like to say, "We too poor to eat meat."
And movies, well. . . I will list a few of my favorites. I prefer horror and sci-fi, but my tastes are broad and I'll watch many things. I don't particularly enjoy stupid comedies, chick flicks, or boring action movies (although I LOVE the superhero subgenre). My top picks are The Graduate, Psycho (original), The Haunting (original), American Beauty, American History X, Clue, The Shawshank Redemption, and V for Vendetta. There are more. . . many more. There are few things I watch regularly on tv, my absolute favorite being The Walking Dead. I also enjoy American Horror Story, forensic crime shows, and Family Guy/American Dad/King of the Hill/Cleveland Show. I have a weird addiction to Futurama. I detest most Adult Swim original programming.
I'm intelligent, funny, agnostic, a democrat, hardworking, tolerant and open to alternative lifestyles (although I myself do not have one). I worked at an Islamic school for two years and loved the people there.
I don't like to camp, hunt, or fish. I don't even eat fish. I am up for a hike, though. During the day. With no snakes.
Some of my pet peeves: Bad spelling or grammar drives me nuts. Also, t-shirts with "sayings" on them.
In the interest of being forthcoming, I'm overweight but not plus size, and I was married very briefly six years ago. Young people are stupid. Those two things aside, I'm pretty awesome.
