Modern Girl: Dia goes to Rebar (Port saint Lucie) 21yr
I am a recent transplant from San Diego, California, also known as America's finest city. Why i moved cross country to the treasure coast specifically is another post in and of it's own.
It's a little tough moving from the extremely liberal west coast to the south being a 21 year old femme lesbian. While i may not look at it first, i have a lot of pride and even in such a red state, i'll be out and proud. San diego has it's own little gay village and time after time, i've found myself in major gay clubs pounding back the Midori and Cranberries and chatting up older dyke tourists. But i digress.
My (straight) brother first told me about Rebar one night as we drove to Redemption
"You know there's a gay bar close to where we live?" he said taking a drag from his camel crush
"oh?"
"yeah we can check it out if you want."
Months later, i finally took him up on his word. i read a few not so positive reviews but as adventurous as i am i decided not to let Google ruin a potentially awesome night. So i put on my fishnets and boots, i did my hair and make up just so and at exactly 10:00 pm we arrived at Rebar.
It was a small building but the parking lot was somewhat full. there were 3 doors, two completely blacked out and the last one had a slight twinkle from beer signs. I made my way to the entrance. Inside, there was a bar in the middle of the room, big screen TVs playing music videos, full lighting, and an empty (!) dance floor. I flashed my ID, paid my cover and received my green wristband even if i wouldn't be drinking that night. The club had a somewhat smoky ambience to it since smoking is allowed inside the club. Pretty cool detail and i can live with it. I sat in a booth and took in my surroundings.
There was lots of younger kids, mostly underage (from their baby faces) with X's on their hands. A group of younger lesbians was strirring up drama, a group of young gays were playing pool. The bar had a few gorgeous older lesbians playing in the machines. After about 5 minutes we were told our booth was reserved, even if there was no sign saying so, we moved to play pool. In the back of the lounge i scanned the whole room and as more people poured in as the night played on.
More. Underage. KIDS.
Seeing as i have no friends in the treasure coast, i wanted to chat up a few girls. i was met with,
"umm i'm straight"
"i'm here with my boyfriend"
I later found out a lot of straight people go Rebar. I felt a bit of frustration as it seemed there was no safe spot for LGBT people to just go and mingle amongst eachother since straight people actually go in big groups and make up the majority. Also, the few lgbt people i've met in the area are closeted due to family, surroundings, etc making it harder for me to find anyone and increasing my frustrations. They had a few drag queens perform, which i loved but soon after i found myself heading towards the exit.
"how'd you like it?" asked the brother
"eh" i answered, "it's alright."
I got into the car and we drove off. Maybe i'll make the trip to West Palm next time.

Ok, that was goofy, but I'm a nerd like that. Hm, where do I start?
